Baz Luhrmann, the multihyphenate known for bringing a stunning artistic style to such films as “The Great Gatsby” (2013) and “Romeo + Juliet” (1996), is up for a 2020 best musical theater album Grammy for “Moulin Rouge! The Musical”, based on his 2001 movie of the same name.
USA TODAY’s Patrick Ryan said “Moulin Rouge! The Musical”, which opened on Broadway in July, was “wildly entertaining.” Luhrmann is currently working on an Elvis Presley biopic starring Austin Butler as Presley and Tom Hanks as manger Colonel Tom Parker.
Ahead of Music’s Biggest Night, which takes place Jan. 26 in Los Angeles, Luhrmann shared a playlist of his favorite songs with USA TODAY.
“Crazy Rolling” – Aaron Tveit, Karen Olivo, Original Broadway Cast of “Moulin Rouge! The Musical”
Even though I was part of the producing team to record this, I sometimes forget it’s a new work made up of a two previously existing masterful songs.
“Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues” – Elvis Presley
Listening to a lot of Elvis with my current project, his range astounds me— from country and Western to rock, to soul and pop. That’s probably the most misunderstood thing about him as a vocal artist. There was nothing he couldn’t sing.
“Watermelon Sugar” – Harry Styles
Today was a 40 degrees (celsius/104 degrees Fahrenheit) summer scorcher in Queensland, Australia. Thank goodness Mr. Styles, amongst his many and varied achievements on his wonderful new album, has nailed this summer’s summer song.
“Dead of Night” – Orville Peck
Mysterious, cool, country, Roy Orbison, his look, the performance. What’s not to like?
“Faraway Look” – Yola
I recently found myself in the enviable position of working with the wonderful Dave Cobb in RCA Studio A in Nashville, recording this incredible artist. Listen to this track and you’ll see what I mean!

“Cheap Queen” – King Princess
About a year ago, a friend of mine invited me down to a showcase in the Lower East Side at Mercury Lounge. You knew you were in the presence of an exciting new artist — her name was King Princess.

“Really don’t like u” – Tove Lo feat. Kylie Minogue
What can I say, I love Kylie…
“Karaoke” – Big Freedia feat. Lizzo
There’s a reason why Lizzo’s captured all of our hearts and ears.
“Shout, Sister, Shout!” – Sister Rosetta Tharpe (with Lucky Millinder and His Orchestra)
A big shout-out to the godmother of rock n’ roll!
