Both outlets report that Carter, 35, died after a gun, which was meant to be a music video prop, accidentally went off.
“He was a wonderful artist,” Carter’s mother, Cindy McClellan, told Fox. “He was the voice, he was the total package and we’re trying to keep his legend (alive). … He just loved music, he was very gifted and by God, his voice was spectacular.”
Carter’s death was also acknowledged on @justincartercountry, an unverified Instagram account.
“Justin is no longer with us, he has passed away,” reads a caption on the account. “He will be missed by us all, he was always full of joy, laughter, and loved (by) so many people in his life. Justin appreciated all his fans and their support.”
Fox and ABC13 both report that Carter had recently signed with Triple Threat Management. USA TODAY has reached out to TTM for comment.
