Aretha Franklin is set to be celebrated on one of the biggest sports-television showcases of the year.
The late Queen of Soul will be honored during the “Monday Night Football” season kickoff on ESPN, a doubleheader that starts with the Detroit Lions’ game against the New York Jets at Ford Field.
A two-minute video, taped in Detroit on Sunday, features Boyz II Men and Tori Kelly performing Franklin’s “Rock Steady” at spots around Detroit, sources tell the Free Press.
Footage was shot at Motown Record’s Hitsville, U.S.A., United Sound Systems studio and at the Music Hall’s newly rechristened Aretha’s Jazz Cafe (formerly just Jazz Cafe), just around the corner from Ford Field.
As announced last week, Eminem will oversee the coin toss at tonight’s Lions game.
The music video also will air during tonight’s second MNF game, when the Los Angeles Rams visit the Oakland Raiders at 10:20 p.m.
Boyz II Men is fresh off a much-applauded national-anthem performance Thursday night in their hometown Philadelphia.
