Lil Nas X, the artist behind “Old Town Road,” came out as gay in a new song titled “c7osure.” The rapper confirmed the news on his Twitter account.
Just when Lil Nas X’s ride down the “Old Town Road” started to slow, the song galloped to another remarkable sales record.
The monster summer hit reached Diamond status Tuesday, per the Recording Industry Association of America. Moving 10 million certified units (streaming and sales combined), it’s the fastest song in RIAA history to reach the milestone, Billboard reported.
It’s the first song of 2019 to reach Diamond status.
And it’s only the second single labeled “country” (a point of contention in popular culture earlier this year) to reach the sales milestone — joining Florida Georgia Line megahit “Cruise.”
Two country artists — Taylor Swift and Garth Brooks — have earned Diamond album certifications, for “Fearless” and “The Ultimate Hits,” respectively.
Lil Nas X and “Old Town Road” collaborator Billy Ray Cyrus made history in July when the song became the longest-running No. 1 single in Billboard Hot 100 history. Backed by a handful of remixes, the song spent 19 weeks topping the chart.
“Old Town Road” punched a ticket earlier this year to the 53rd CMA Awards by earning a nomination for “Musical Event of the Year.” The annual award show takes place Nov. 13 at Bridgestone Arena.
Voters aren’t sure:Should ‘Old Town Road’ be nominated for the CMA Awards?
