Rob Thomas, the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and Matchbox 20 frontman, is currently gearing up for his North American Chip Tooth Tour, in support of his fourth solo album “Chip Tooth Smile.” The tour kicks off later this month and stretches through November.
To celebrate, Thomas curated a playlist of favorites for USA TODAY, featuring new tracks from Vampire Weekend and old classics from Tom Petty.
“I Guess I Just Feel Like” – John Mayer
Classic John. His voice, that guitar, this song; sounds like a hug.
“Now That You’re Gone” – The Raconteurs
I get excited any time Jack White comes out with anything. Throw Brendan Benson in there, and it’s a no brainer.
“Every Time I Hear That Song” – Brandi Carlile
Every time Brandi opens her mouth an old soul flies out.
“Seventeen” – Sharon Van Etten
I’m a little disappointed in myself for not finding Sharon until recently but I’m making up for it.
“Harmony Hall” – Vampire Weekend
Every time I hear a VW album it sounds like the same band, but a more mature and better version of that band. And I really like that band.
“Mr. Tillman” – Father John Misty
This guy is a master storyteller. This story is sad, funny and mysterious.
“Wolves” – Kyle Cook
My man Kyle made a great record. This is the title track. Haunting.
“Get the Point” – My Morning Jacket
As break up songs go, this is as straight to the point and sad as it gets.
“Half the World Away” – Aurora
Thank you late night TV for helping me stumble on this gem.
“For Real” – Tom Petty
Not sure when he wrote this but, after his passing the lyrics are even more poignant and sad and inspirational.
